Bridging Cultures: Yokota and Fussa high schools strengthen sister-school ties

Yokota Air Base, Japan – The partnership between Yokota High School and Fussa High School, born from a sister-school agreement established in August 2022, stands as a shining example of cross-cultural connection. Designed to help students develop a broad international perspective, the program recently brought the two communities together for a dynamic day of exchange.

The event was spearheaded by the dedicated leadership of Yokota’s Japanese National Honor Society (JNHS). JNHS President Ryunosuke Roesch served as the primary coordinator, working alongside Advisor Clarissa Bayse to organize logistics for the entire day. The team collaborated closely with Fussa faculty to finalize schedules and arrange base access for the visiting 44 students and six teachers.

The event began at 07:20 with a welcome presentation before students were divided into four groups to experience a rotating schedule of activities. This structure ensured every Fussa student experienced a wide array of American classroom environments, including lunch with their Yokota peers.

Highlights of the academic exchange included:

• Culinary Arts: Students collaborated to bake sweet bread. Reflecting on the experience, teacher Barry Oxendine stated, “Food bridges gaps that words cannot; it unites people across borders.”
• JROTC: Cadets taught team-building exercises and drills using commands in both languages. Major Sideno, the NJROTC instructor, commented, “This event showed that when our AFJROTC cadets and our Japanese guests come together, drill becomes more than steps and commands. It becomes a bridge. Community grows, culture shines through, and you're reminded that fun is a language every young person speaks fluently, no translator required.”
• Academic Immersion: Students engaged in Spanish language practice, learned news production in Video Communication, observed Chemistry demonstrations, and participated in Physical Education sports.
• Shadowing: Fussa students paired with JNHS members to observe how American classes operate firsthand.

The exchange provided an authentic setting for Yokota students to practice Japanese while fostering confidence and empathy. The successful day concluded with goodbye speeches and a group photo.

"Our Japanese exchange has deepened our appreciation for Japanese culture and connected our students with the Japanese students,” said JNHS President Ryunosuke Roesch.

With the event complete, the community looks forward to the next step in this enduring partnership: a visit to Fussa High School planned for February.
